What a great turnout, including quite a few new faces. Lots of entries on the night caused a little difficulty with the maps, but luckily some were OK to run as pairs sharing a map.
I had a quick outing after the starts closed and saw a few out on their runs, but the large area swallowed everyone up. I noticed that on Short, every control was visited by at least one person though rarely by more than three, so that suggests a good variety of routes were chosen.
How did everyone find their runs?
Thanks Alasdair I really enjoyed the run and getting back to the adventure of being out in the dark. The liberal scattering of high scoring controls made for lots of variation in route choice, I was certainly making lots of changes as I progressed. Thank you.
Thanks for organising Alasdair. There was a lot of route choice and no clear ‘best way’ of attempting the course. I started on the blue, collecting the controls to the west of the start, before working my way up the east side of the map and swapping over at #62 at the northern end. I then hoovered up the reds on the western side of the map. I didn’t bother with many of the controls on the south side of the main road on the grounds of the contours.
Crossing that main road was a bit tricky due to all the rush hour traffic, but luckily I found some decent gaps and didn’t lose much time. Annoyingly I got trapped on a cricket pitch trying to shortcut across the field to #22, and found the 1 private path trying to get to #20.
All in all, a good area and nicely planned course.
Thanks Alasdair. I didn’t get a chance to thank you on the night - I did think you’d gone to hide somewhere!
Very enjoyable run. My eyes aren’t used to running at night this winter, so it took a while to adjust. A learning point for me is that I should keep well away from busy roads whilst getting my bearings and reading the map. It would have been better to head into the park.
I took an anti-clockwise route around the right hand side of the map, but had to rush back through the town so Ray beat me due to my 1minute time penalty. I didn’t have a problem with Maprun for a change!
I’ve completed the review of the punching, so the scores should now be accurate.
Anyone who tried to get #34 was credited with it as I hadn’t mapped the car park well enough to show the southwards turn required to get the control.
Its worth noting that the dot in the centre of the control circle shows the side of the road the control is on. #12, for instance, was on the south side of the road, allowing those on long course who wanted to start with #11 to get to it with no problems, and those who wanted to start with #12 to start with that by crossing the zebra.
A couple of beginners arrived after all the pre-entries had collected their maps and I went out with them to help them get the hang of it.
The traffic wasn’t anywhere near so bad during my recces, but obviously the Tiverton rush hour goes on quite a while. Something I need to consider in timing recces next time. And I realised after the event I’d not correctly identified the extent of the 40 zone (I thought I’d OOB’d all the roads above 30).
Sorry about the private path near #20. Obviously I missed that on the recces and it made it through to the map.
I had deliberately omitted the cricket field fence for clarity, not thinking anyone would be approaching from the NE and find it a problem. Anyone trying to direct from #21 to #20 would also have found fences in their way but at least would have not been able to get in and stuck. It does raise an interesting question for future planners about how much to add.
Good to see lots of runners took part.
Can the pin access be removed as it would be interesting to look at the route choices made.
Also there hasn’t been any change to requests to be able to run after the evening for those unable to attend - doesn’t need to be competitive.
League tables now added to website - there’s a link to them on the event page for the next street event at Wilton
