British Long Distance Championships - 25/03 - Results

17 QOs headed down the M4 to a breezy Cold Ash near Newbury. It is an area of mixed woodland with several gently sloping hills and a fairly extensive path network. The northern part of the area is mostly commercial forest, both broadleaf and conifer. The longer courses also visited the western part of Bucklebury Common further south, a series of shallow, marshy valleys mainly comprising fast runnable broadleaf woodland interspersed with holly.

Bee (M10) unfortunately struggled with the tricky path network and, after persevering for a long time, eventually retired at control 3. Finley (M14) took on his first light green course finishing in 22nd with a bronze award. Hamish (M18) unfortunately dropped his map after control 10 and had to retire.

We had four representative on M21E - Adam lead the group finishing an impressive 21st (Gold standard), with Robin in 34th (Silver), Ollie @Mr_Rant in 40th (Bronze) and Luke in 47th.

Phil (M45) @daylightgambler, nursing an injured ankle, finished 35th (Bronze). On M50, Richard @RichardS finished 19th with Pete @Pete in 29th (both Silver). Jeff @Jeff.Pakes , suffering from lack of sleep, finished 34th (Bronze).

Andy @andyr (M60), who had been celebrating the night before, finished 50th (Bronze), and Paul (M60) missed control 15. Steve @srober10 (M70) had the race of the club, finishing in the top 10 and earning a Championship award. Tony (M75) finished 29th (Silver).

Shelia (W55) finished 17th (Silver) and Rosie @RosieW (W65) finished 18th (Bronze).

Overall, it was a great day, despite the challenges faced by some members. The mixed woodland terrain was a tough course, but everyone put up a good fight and earned some excellent results.

Despite a rush to the start I had an enjoyable run. I twisted my ankle last Saturday at an Octavian Droobers event but it was heavily strapped up and held up well although it did mean I was overly hesitant.

It took me a few controls to get the confidence to reduce reliance on paths and to cut across the terrain which was usually the better choice, but I think I could have done better if I had taken more direct routes.

I was otherwise pleased with my navigation with no major errors - I just need to get fitter and choose better routes!
